Charity set up to help honour-based victims

A woman who risked her life to give evidence in a landmark honour killing case has set up a charity, True Honour, to help other victims. Sarbjit Athwal’s sister-in-law was taken abroad and killed because she wanted a divorce. Despite threats not to speak out, Sarbjit testified against her mother-in-law – who was convicted of organising the murder. The mother of four now campaigns against honour abuse. Asian Network’s Poonam Taneja reports.

11,000 Honour-Based Crimes Reported

At True Honour, we are driven by a single, powerful mission: to stop abuse and save lives. We offer crucial support to victims of honour-based violence (HBV), forced marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Our approach is rooted in personal experience, providing a unique perspective that fosters real change. Through comprehensive training, tireless advocacy, and direct support, we empower survivors, influence policies, and build safer communities. Join us in breaking the silence, restoring dignity, and creating a world where no one has to suffer in the name of ‘honour.’

Remembering the victims of honour killings

My mother-in-law came back alone. When I asked what had happened, she said nobody would be bringing shame on the family anymore, that they’d got rid of Surjit. I felt sick to my stomach and my knees started wobbling – how could they have done this?
